This Is Why I'm Here... 1

I stood up rather slowly and took it from her, "Thank you." I wiped some tears from my eyes and frowned, I had to sit in a cop car... this was scaring me.

"I'm Rhema Harrison..." I finally introduced myself.

"Linda Hawksey." She opened the door and smiled. "You should sit in the front. It's safer than the backseat. And we'll be going pretty fast to get you there."

I nodded. Could I fit? Well I supposed I could, I wasn't going to be behind the wheel anyway. "Thanks..." I got in and buckled up.

"We're gonna go see Daddy!" I said to the baby, she had stalled in kicking but then picked it up again. She loved her daddy and I knew it! <3

Oh Kyle. TT-TT I felt so numb. I knew that would change when I got there.

It didn't take long for them to arrive and the deputy escorted Rhema to the room Kyle would eventually be put in. "He's coming to this room, but he's in surgery at the moment." Linda said. "Once he's out of surgery, they'll bring him in. If you need anything, food, or clothes, we'll gladly get it for you."

"Can I get some saltines... I haven't eaten dinner and I don't want anything too big... just a snack. But I don't want to eat a full dinner without Kyle..." I needed to eat though, I was really forcing myself.

I woke up to the most annoying beeping noise you could ever imagine! "What is that beeping?!" I exclaimed, sitting up straight with a frown.

I shot awake with a bit of a gasp, my heart was pounding because I hadn't slept all night and I hadn't expected him to wake up like that. The baby woke up too apparently! >.<

"Ooh... Kyle!" I got up and walked to his side, laying him down a little, "You were in an accident, it's okay." I had the worst crick in my neck, I must have slept on it wrong.

"An accident? That's why I'm in a hospital?" I looked around, then looked at her. I had no recollection of it. "Please tell me you weren't there."

"Oh, not at all..." I sat back down and sighed, "I was at home and I got the call... the cop said you told me that you loved me and that it would be okay... so you were a bit conscious I guess." I wanted to go back to sleep but I needed to be right there for him.

I had already heard about his legs the night before. He didn't know yet and I was scared he'd go into shock.

"Oh... hah, that sounds like me! So, when am I allowed out of here?" I grinned.

"Um well... ah..." I wondered if I should be the one to tell him or if I should wait for a doctor. But then, I could tell him in a more gentle manner than a doctor could.

I looked at him and sighed, "You... you're legs have to heal... from... a...am..." I choked on the words, "they... you.. l-lost your... l-legs..."

Gentle. No. More like ran through a food processor. T-T

I stared at her. "My legs?" That was when I realized... I couldn't feel my legs. I hadn't noticed until then. "I lost... my legs..." I took my blankets and flipped them back to reveal two heavily bandaged nubs. "Oh... w-well then... at least we can get handicapped parking spaces when we get a vehicle now!" I grinned, trying to make the best of it and trying not to upset her, even though I was pretty upset myself.

I'd never be able to walk again. I'd never be able to dance again and when the baby comes, I won't be able to drive my wife to the emergency room. I won't be able to pick her up, and I won't be taller than her. I hated this. Hated it with a passion.

I was trying to act like I wasn't phased by this at all, that it didn't bother me but I knew he had to be in pain and I knew he was hiding that he was upset, I could tell by the look in his eyes.

"It's going to be okay." I smiled, "It's all going to work out." I took his hand and squeezed it.

"Of course it will! Everything else does!" I was still grinning. I gulped and squeezed her hand back. "How am I going to tell my mother about this?"

"Just like we told her about the pregnancy... except we won't use webcam, we'll just tell her what happened and not be as chipper about it but try not to worry her at the same time." Ahh, the baby was kicking my ribs. I felt like the air was being knocked right out of me.

"Hey young lady... go to sleep, it's not time to be bouncing around..." I sighed.

I reached my hand out and felt of her belly. The kicks were almost non-stop. "Sorry, I just had to feel of her." Between my wife and the little one, I was calming down. "I can't wait to see her."

"She's going to be such a handful, I can already tell." I grinned warmly, "I think she missed you a lot, she kicked like this when I said we were going to see you last night." I giggled.

"Kyle... how are you feeling?" I asked, "Does it hurt... do I need to get you anything?" I wanted to climb right into bed with him but I didn't want to hurt him.

I shook my head with a small frown before realizing my mistake and grinning. "Nope... I can't feel a thing!"

I climbed onto the bed and then laid next to him, resting my head on his chest and before I knew it, I was crying. I guess things couldn't stay easy for long, maybe we had it too easy.

I wrapped my arms around her and pulled her close. "My precious doll... don't cry. I'm okay, and I'm alive!" I kissed the top of her head. "W-We'll make this work."

"I think I can get another job... maybe I'd have to drop school though." I pondered out loud, "I can work weekends, keep my morning job and take night classes..."

"No, don't change a thing. I'll just call my boss and ask for a job as a cashier... unless he thinks it'll bring more business to have a wheelchair-bound waiter..."

"But... okay..." I would have to get used to this, there would be a lot of changes around the house for sure. A week later we went home and tried to get into a new routine.

I didn't like leaving him by himself. TT-TT

I patted my lap. "Sit with me!!" I grinned. "Siiiiiit with meeeee!"

"I weigh more than ninety-eight pounds you know..." I sighed, I looked like a beached whale... that may have been over exaggerating but I wasn't the skinny short girl anymore... for now anyway. I was doing the dishes when he called me, I could barely even reach the faucet.

"I weigh... 'idon'twannaknow' pounds."
